In keeping with the strict safety regulations in Thailand, our school has chosen to upgrade its fire alarm system. And by upgrade I mean install one that didn't work for the first 4 months of school. They finally (FINALLY!) got it working and then....all hell broke loose. In the past couple of months we've had the alarm go off because of
1) no reason (that happened at least twice)
So when the next one went off for reason #2 - Dr. Alan's oil experiment causing a few fumes in the science lab - everyone meandered into the hallway, spent precious life-saving minutes staring inquisitively at each other (is it real this time?), and then mosied out of the building. Needless to say we didn't break any RIST evacuation time records that day.
3) A student threw a home-made mini-bomb into a locker during lunchtime. Now, as science department head I take partial blame for this. At least the kids are now questioning and experimenting. Where were you, values teachers?
4) An air-conditioning unit caught on fire. My colleague Isaac walked into my room during prep and said calmly, "Um, my air conditioning is on fire. The fire alarm should be ringing soon." And so it did. But before I (and most of the students) were out of the building, the alarm stopped ringing. What? This is an ACTUAL fire. You shouldn't stop the alarm when there's an actual fire. The best part was, the unit kept blowing cold air into the room whilst ablaze. Thanks for keeping it real, Isaac.

** Note: These pictures were taken by my friend and colleague Isaac. Instead of running like hell, he stopped to take pictures. That's dedication.
