Summer of Love

This summer was a whirlwind of family, friends, and FOOD! Luckily (for Ryan) there were no trips to Mongolia to rush off to, so our time in the US was long and high quality.

I spent a good part of the summer in San Francisco, where I completed a yoga certification course at Its Yoga down on Folsom Street. Of course, I fell in love with the city all over again and saw visions of yuppy neighbors, organic coffee shops, and moderate climate in our near future. As Mark Twain said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” and when the fog rolled in I was quickly reminded of why I will never live in the city again! While I stayed in the Bay Area, Ryan completed IB training in Montezuma, New Mexico. He’s now IB Level II certified! You ask, What does that mean? It means he’s a badass.

Connecting with our parents is increasingly special to us as we get older, and this summer was no exception. I re-lived my childhood as my mom dropped me off at the yoga studio with my bag lunch and then promptly picked me up to drive me home afterwards. Who says regression is always negative? Ryan spent time with our California parents up and down the coast, and we were thankful to enjoy a week in the Rocky Mountains with our with our Colorado parents.

Here we are with all of our parents (and my sister, Ashley)!

These are our top 5 things about the summer:

1) Burritos.

2) Not sweating, even though everyone seems to be complaining about the heat.

3) American culture! While living abroad makes us understand and appreciate other cultures, it also reminds us that our own culture is wonderful as well. We love American creativity and efficiency. We love Salt Lake City’s Pioneer Days, with floats and Mormons and Polynesians all thrown together. We love birthday parties at bowling alleys. We love environmentally friendly cars, laws, and thinking. We love hiking. We love sports on TV (OK, that’s just Ryan). A float in the Pioneer Days parade.

4) Becoming a fairy godmother. I had the privilege of becoming godmother to Kendall this summer. She’s sweet and cuddly and sleeps through the night. What a baby!
Joanne and Amir with baby Kendall!

5) Fireworks. We saw the best 4th of July fireworks show in Avon, Colorado.

It was great to reconnect with our loved ones, and we are thankful to everyone who opened their homes and schedules to us!

It was fun to read about your time home this summer! I woke up in the morning recently and thought to myself if I were going back to Thailand I would be saying goodbye to my friends and family, and saying sawadeeka to the HEAT, so then I breathed a sigh of relief! I can't wait to hear how your year with your new students is going!
We are getting CrossFit Tacoma underway!!! Check out www.crossfittacoma.com

yogi & badass, sounds like a great summer. i'm jealous you (rach) were in San Fran. what a great city, it's up there with burritos in my book. ryan, i'm not jealous of you. ever. however, i think you should put that IB level deuce to work and request a week off to come to dubai. then we can gamble (nope), drink (not really), and wear speedos in public (?). it'll be a hoot. happy days in bkk.
